Queer and Trans Game Studies

My Queer and Trans Game Studies course looks closely at an ongoing movement of queer people, trans people, and people of color who are designing independent, political video games and experimental art. The final project for this course involves a game design project where students design a game using a non-game engine, which includes platforms like Microsoft Excel, Qualtrics, PowerPoint, and other platforms.

Queer and Feminist Publics

In Queer and Feminist Publics, we look at publics and counter-publics, or groups of people who may not know each other but are connected through a common or shared politic or viewpoint, and how these publics are increasingly mediated by online media and communities. At the end of this course, students design their own zines.

My Queer and Trans Technology studies course looks closely the ways in which queer people, trans people, and people of color have been writing about and using technology to critique normative systems of history, surveillance, and the control of the body. In the final project for this course, students design their own speculative technology that addresses a need in their own communities.

In this course, we look closely at the writing of history and examine presences and absences in the archive as a collection (or assemblage) of objects and documents. This course also involves visits to archives local to New York City, including the Riot Grrrl Archive and the LGBTQIA+ collections held by the New York Public Library.
